Private schools may fingerprint prospective employees to perform internal safety measures, or to comply with accreditation through the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).ISBE requires all accredited schools to perform a fingerprint-based criminal history records check on their employees and student teachers. In additional to the criminal records check, the Illinois Sex Offender Registry and Murderer and Violent Offender Against Youth Registry must be checked. In addition, firms contracting with the school whose employees will have direct, daily contact with students must submit to a fingerprint-based check. Volunteers are not required to be fingerprinted, but ISBE recommends that a school have written volunteer procedures in place and that any volunteer who has direct, daily contact with students undergo fingerprinting.
